This Buffalo Chicken Dip Bread Bowl is the ultimate party appetizer. Creamy, spicy buffalo chicken dip is baked inside a hollowed-out sourdough loaf, creating an edible bowl that’s perfect for game day, potlucks, and any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup buffalo wing sauce (Frank’s RedHot recommended)
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing (or blue cheese dressing)
  • 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken (rotisserie chicken works well)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (about 1.5 to 2 pounds)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  2. Prepare the bread bowl: Using a sharp serrated knife, cut a circle about 2 inches from the edge of the top of the sourdough loaf, about 2 inches deep, creating a lid. Lift off the lid and set aside. Reach into the bread and pull out the soft inner crumb, leaving about a 1-inch thick wall all around the inside. Save the bread pieces for dipping.
  3. Soften the cream cheese: If forgotten to take out of the fridge, microwave in 10-second bursts until soft but not melted (about 20-30 seconds total).
  4. Mix the dip base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, buffalo wing sauce, and ranch dressing. Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and well combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  5. Add the chicken and most of the cheese: Fold in the shredded chicken, 1 cup of the shredded cheddar, and 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella. Stir until evenly distributed.
  6. Fill the bread bowl: Spoon the dip mixture into the hollowed-out bread bowl, packing it in gently. Mound it slightly on top.
  7. Top with remaining cheese: Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar and 1/2 cup of mozzarella over the top.
  8. Place the bread bowl on the prepared baking sheet. Put the bread lid on the baking sheet next to the bowl (optional: brush with melted butter and garlic powder).
  9. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until the dip is hot and bubbly and the cheese on top is melted and starting to turn golden brown. For extra browning, broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching closely.
  10. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  11. Garnish with sliced green onions. Serve the bread bowl on a platter surrounded by reserved bread pieces, crackers, tortilla chips, or celery sticks.

Notes

For a less soggy bread bowl, toast the hollowed-out loaf in the oven for 5 minutes before filling. Shred your own cheese for better melting. Let the cream cheese soften to room temperature for smooth mixing. Don’t overfill the bread bowl; leave about 1/2 inch of space at the top.
