Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds (white or black)
  • 1 cup milk of choice (whole milk, oat milk, or almond milk)
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (or dairy-free coconut yogurt)
  • 1–2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup mixed berries (fresh or frozen; strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
  • 1 tablespoon water (only if using fresh berries)
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey (optional, for tart berries)
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Make the berry compote: Add berries, water (if using fresh berries), maple syrup, and lemon juice to a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until berries break down and release juices. Gently mash some berries with the back of a spoon, leaving some whole for texture. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Mix the oat base: In a medium mixing bowl, combine rolled oats, chia seeds, milk, Greek yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk vigorously for about 30 seconds until well combined and chia seeds are evenly distributed. Scrape down sides of bowl with a spatula.
  3. Layer the ingredients: Spoon about 2 tablespoons of berry compote into the bottom of each jar. Pour oat mixture on top, dividing evenly between jars. Leave about 1/2 inch of space at the top for expansion.
  4. Create the swirl: Drop remaining berry compote by spoonfuls on top of oat mixture. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl berries into oats with a few figure-eight motions—do not overmix.
  5. Seal and refrigerate: Put lids on jars and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, but ideally 8-12 hours (overnight).
  6. Serve and enjoy: In the morning, give the jar a gentle stir. If too thick, add a splash of milk and stir again. Top with extra fresh berries, chia seeds, nut butter, or chopped nuts. Eat cold or let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes.

Notes

For best texture, use rolled oats (not instant or steel-cut). Chia seeds expand to about 10 times their volume—1 tablespoon per cup of oats is ideal. Let oats rest at least 6 hours, but 8-12 hours is best. If oats are too thin, reduce milk by 2 tablespoons or add extra teaspoon of chia seeds next time. If too thick, stir in a splash of milk in the morning. The flavor improves after 1-2 days in the fridge. Store sealed in refrigerator for up to 5 days. Do not freeze.
