A quick and festive breakfast featuring toasted bread spread with cream cheese and decorated with fresh blueberries and strawberries arranged to resemble the American flag.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 thick slices of white or whole wheat bread (day-old preferred)
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup (150 g) fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup (150 g) fresh strawberries, sliced thin
  • Fresh raspberries or extra strawberries (optional)
  • 1 tbsp (20 ml) honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • Fresh mint leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Toast 4 slices of bread in a toaster or under the broiler until golden and crisp, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Soften the cream cheese in a small bowl by stirring if still firm.
  3. Spread about 2 tablespoons (30 g) of cream cheese evenly on each toast slice in a thin, smooth layer.
  4. Rinse blueberries gently and pat dry. Slice strawberries thinly lengthwise.
  5. On two toast slices, arrange a cluster of blueberries in the top-left corner to form the ‘star’ section of the flag.
  6. Use sliced strawberries to create horizontal red stripes across all four toasts, overlapping slightly for a full look.
  7. Drizzle honey or maple syrup lightly over the berries if desired.
  8. Garnish with fresh mint leaves for color and freshness.
  9. Serve immediately while the bread is crisp and cream cheese is cool.

Notes

Use day-old bread for sturdier toast. Rinse and dry berries well to avoid soggy toast. Softened cream cheese spreads more smoothly and prevents tearing the bread. Assemble just before serving for best texture. Frozen berries can be used if thawed and drained well. Variations include swapping berries or using dairy-free cream cheese.
