These no-bake Graveyard Dirt Cups are a spooky and fun dessert made with layers of creamy chocolate pudding, crushed Oreos, and gummy worms. Perfect for Halloween parties or any gathering, they’re incredibly easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 (3.9-ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 (8-ounce) container Cool Whip, thawed
  • 1 (14.3-ounce) package Oreo cookies (about 36 cookies)
  • Gummy worms
  • Small candy pumpkins or other seasonal candy (optional)
  • Chocolate wafer cookies or chocolate graham crackers for ‘tombstones’

Instructions

  1. Crush the Oreos. Place the entire package of Oreos (filling and all) into a food processor. Pulse until you get fine crumbs that look like dirt. If you don’t have a food processor, put them in a large zip-top bag and smash them with a rolling pin. You want some small chunks for texture, but mostly fine crumbs. Set aside.
  2. Make the pudding layer. In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy—about 2 minutes. Add the powdered sugar and beat until combined. It should look like a thick frosting.
  3. Prepare the pudding. In a separate medium bowl, whisk the instant chocolate pudding mix with the cold milk for about 2 minutes, until it starts to thicken. It will be very soft at this point—that’s normal.
  4. Combine everything. Pour the pudding mixture into the cream cheese mixture and beat until smooth. Then, gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip with a spatula until no white streaks remain. The mixture should be light, fluffy, and incredibly creamy.
  5. Start layering. Grab your cups. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the Oreo ‘dirt’ into the bottom of each cup. Press it down lightly with the back of a spoon.
  6. Add the pudding. Spoon or pipe the pudding mixture over the Oreo layer, filling the cup about halfway. I like to use a piping bag for a cleaner look, but a spoon works just fine.
  7. Hide the worms. This is the fun part. Press 2 or 3 gummy worms into the pudding layer, letting their tails stick out slightly. This is the ‘surprise’ element that makes everyone smile.
  8. Finish layering. Add another layer of pudding, filling the cup to about 3/4 full. Then top with a generous layer of Oreo crumbs, completely covering the pudding. It should look like a little pot of dirt.
  9. Decorate and chill. Place a candy tombstone or a chocolate wafer on top, and maybe add a few more gummy worms peeking out. Cover the cups with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, but overnight is even better. The flavors meld together beautifully.

Notes

Don’t over-mix the Cool Whip; fold it in gently. Chill the cups for at least 2 hours before serving. Use room temperature cream cheese to avoid lumps. These are even better the next day.
